Did you know that the estimated cost of back pain to the NHS is £481 million a year?
Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are extremely common. According to the NHS, over 20 million people in the UK have an MSK condition such as arthritis or back pain, and they account for up to 30% of GP consultations in England. Sadly, as MSK conditions vary so much from person to person in cause and severity, around 29% of patients return to their GP within three months.
Also, long waiting lists mean that patients often have to wait weeks or months to be given treatment, so are frequently prescribed painkillers in the meantime, which if relied upon for too long can cause adverse effects. If you’d like to learn more about over-reliance on painkillers, you can read our blog about it here.
This Chiropractic Awareness Week (17-21 April), the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) has undertaken a UK-wide research of 5,000 people to understand the impact NHS waiting lists are having on musculoskeletal health. Data from this research shows that over half (56%) of British people feel put off seeing their GP because of NHS waiting lists. Suffering from an MSK condition without treatment can lead to a lower quality of life, affecting employment, mental health and relationships.
To support our colleagues in the NHS, chiropractors can provide those suffering with MSK conditions an alternative solution. We offer chiropractic and physio appointments without the wait. Our care is supported by the best evidence and results in great outcomes. More people are turning to our chiropractors and physio to manage poor mobility, pain and wider health concerns that come from MSK issues.
Chiropractors are supporting the NHS as part of an integrated system. Importantly, we can halt the development of chronic conditions that further impact the NHS later down the line.
If you or someone you know is suffering from an MSK condition, book in for consultation with us. We’re always happy to help you.
