Thinking of trying acupuncture to help your chronic pain? Here’s everything you need to know about this amazing alternative treatment.
What conditions does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture, or dry needling, is also part of physiotherapy and is the practice of inserting very thin flexible needles into targeted areas of the body. It has roots in ancient Chinese medicine that has been used for millennia and remains a common and effective treatment worldwide. It’s officially recognised as complementary medicine by the NHS.
It’s used to treat a range of complaints, often for chronic pain, muscle spasm and tension headaches. Here at Sundial we find acupuncture very helpful in treating recurrent headaches coming from the neck – so called cervicogenic headaches.
The insertion of needles has been shown to stimulate nerve-rich areas in the skin, creating a painkilling effect. As the needle creates a tiny irritation, the body responds with a healing response from the immune system, promoting wound-healing and pain modulation. Clinical trials have recently shown it to be effective in the treatment of fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, TMJ dysfunction and osteoarthritis.
Is it right for me?
Acupuncture is a safe and beneficial treatment for many pain-related conditions. The needles used are very thin and flexible, not at all like the syringes you might associate with injections. Aside from a slight pinch, they’re painless when inserted. Adverse effects are far less likely than that of conventional medication. However, it’s important to see a qualified practitioner for acupuncture and never attempt to do it yourself.
It’s also worth noting that acupuncture is most effective for pain. For example, its efficacy is limited or unknown for things like insomnia, acne, mental health issues and alcohol-dependence.
Does it hurt?
You might feel a small scratch as the needle is inserted in the skin and a deep aching from the muscles beneath. Most people find it relatively comfortable.
How many sessions will I need to see improvement?
You’ll be recommended a course of sessions based on your condition, although it will most likely consist of around 6 appointments. It works most effectively when you have weekly or fortnightly sessions so the effects of acupuncture are given the chance to build up in your system. Some patients take time to see improvement in their symptoms, but many feel better almost straight away.
