Laser Therapy (LLLT)- Relief for acute and chronic pain

Low Level Laser TherapyLow-level laser therapy, also known as cold laser therapy, is the application of red and near infra-red light over tissue injuries to improve soft tissue healing and give relief for both acute and chronic pain.

The intensity of LLLT lasers and LED’s is not high like a surgical laser. There is no heating effect, so LLLT therapy is completely painless. Laser therapy is used to increase the speed, quality and strength of tissue repair, resolve inflammation and give pain relief and is usually done by our physiotherapist.

LLLT has undergone over 1000 published laboratory studies and is already proven in over 100 successful randomised double-blind controlled clinical trials (RCT’s). These trials include osteoarthritis and other sports injuries as well as back and neck pain.

The 3 main benefits in joint and muscle injuries are:

  • Tissue repair—Rapid regeneration of skin, muscle, tendons, ligament, bone and nerves.
  • Inflammation—Resolution of inflammation.
  • Pain relief—Temporary inhibition of nerve conditions in nerve fibres.

LLLT aims to improve healing rates and decrease pain through light stimulation to the cells. Unlike other electrotherapy modalities, it does not aim to alter a cell or tissues, instead it enhances what a cell would do naturally by providing energy to the mitochondria.

Laser therapy is extremely safe with no known contraindications. It can be used for everything active trigger points to repetitive strain injury in the wrist. A special inhibitory feature enables the therapist to reduce ongoing neck & back pain, allowing for beneficial manual treatment.

How does it work?

Low Level Laser TherapyLLLT works to develop the function of cells involved in tissue repair, treating the chemical pathways that cause pain, and improve nerve function. Low-Level Laser Therapy sessions last 15 minutes, usually 6-8 sessions are required. Sessions can be booked separately or are included with a physiotherapy appointment where appropriate.

The most popular use of LLLT is the treatment of sports injuries and joint conditions. Many of the world’s elite athletes use laser therapy to speed their recovery.

LLLT can be effective in treating:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Ligament and tendon injuries
  • Chronic and acute pain
  • Inflammation
  • Joint injuries
  • Bone fractures
  • Osteoarthritis

Is LLLT safe?

There have been no reported cases of negative side effects. We will not perform LLLT to people known to
have active cancer, or any woman who is pregnant, due to a lack of research on the treatment in those areas.
