Shoulder pain is common, especially as we get older. It can affect your ability to do everyday things, stop you from exercising and even disturb your sleep. Here at Sundial our chiropractors and physio’s work together to solve complex shoulder problems quickly.
Our chiropractors assess your spine because your shoulders are directly connected to the neck and spine, so experiencing pain here can be due to spinal dysfunction or stiffness. Our physiotherapists provide ongoing exercises to stabilise and strengthen the shoulder. Sundial is the only outfit in Brighton with chiropractors and physio’s. This joint approach is the best way to get quick pain relief.
Shoulder Injuries Due To Sports
In younger people especially, shoulder pain is generally associated with shoulder instability, especially you are a sporty type. Shoulder biomechanics, strengthening exercises and kinesiology are a few of the many factors that we check you for to prevent injuries. The phrase ‘prevention is better than cure’ applies perfectly to the case of shoulder injuries.
Is My Shoulder Pain Due To Rotator Cuff Injury?
One of the most common areas of shoulder pain as we get older lies at the rotator cuff. Your rotator cuff muscles are almost constantly working during any shoulder movement, as they reinforce the stability and mobility of your shoulder. The pain often results from overuse or demanding activities, but sometimes it can come on for no apparent reason. In this case, performing overhead activities or even trying to raise your arm can be painful.
Another common cause of shoulder pain in middle-aged people is joint-related– a so called ‘frozen shoulder’. Initially, this is a very painful condition and movement can be significantly limited. It can come on for no apparent reason but stress and emotional trauma is related in some people.
In older people, you may experience age-related changes in your shoulder, like osteoarthritis, which can limit movement of your shoulder joint and cause pain. Early intervention in these problems has been shown to significantly improve pain and quality of life, which is what we offer here at Sundial.
Helping Shoulder Pain Yourself
You can buy painkillers over the counter but these are really only suitable for short-term relief. Cold packs can reduce inflammation, swelling and can soothe pain. For long term improvement, of course, a consultation here at Sundial with our physiotherapist is a better solution.
If you have any of the symptoms around your shoulder, such as swelling or a lump, redness with fever, or if it looks different after an injury, seek medical help as soon as possible. Otherwise, it would be best to book an appointment here at Sundial for an assessment of your shoulder.
Relief From Shoulder Pain: The Sundial Way
Everyone’s body works differently, which is why we always outline a treatment plan specifically tailored to you. During the initial assessment of the shoulder, we look at other parts of the body, such as your back, scapula, and neck as these are commonly associated with shoulder pain. Then, we provide a diagnosis and a comprehensive treatment plan to progressively get your shoulder back to normal again. If your goal is to be pain-free in the shoulder and return to normal activities, we can help with that. If your goal is to ‘prehab’ for an upcoming competitive sports season, we can help with that too.
