Sundial clinics Brighton PilatesWhat is Pilates?

The Pilates Method was invented nearly 100 years ago by Joseph Pilates. It revolves around a series of stretching and resistance exercises, combined with a focus on breathing and body awareness, that lead to improved core stability and longer, leaner muscles.

Through Pilates you can correct postural problems and develop a ’scaffold’ that supports your spine, so that tight muscles can relax and tension is eased.

How can Pilates help me?

At the Sundial Clinic, Brighton we’ve achieved fantastic results for people who are suffering from back pain and other injuries by using Pilates in conjunction with their chiropractic treatment. It also works well during and after pregnancy to help improve and restore muscle tone – or it can simply help you get fit.

Apart from supporting your chiropractic treatment, there are many other physical benefits to practicing Pilates:

•    Flattens, tones and strengthens your abdominal muscles
•    Gives you longer leaner muscles
•    Improves posture
•    Develops better muscular control
•    Increases circulation
•    Relieves tension
•    Improves functional fitness
•    Reduces the risk of injury
•    Heightens concentration
•    Enhances your athletic performance

Is it safe?

Yes, Pilates is a very safe form of exercise and our experienced practitioner, Tansy, will carefully tailor your sessions to suit your individual needs. You will be encouraged to work at your own level, either in a class or one to one, and you’ll be advised about which exercises to focus on and which to avoid.

Tansy also consults closely with your chiropractor so that the treatments work together to help guide you back to full recovery.

What clients say

“My introduction to Pilates with Tansy has been an absolute pleasure. She has managed to combine increasingly technically challenging lessons with plenty of fun and lots of laughter, and I already feel an improvement in my posture, breathing and general well-being.” Lucy, Hove
“I’ve really enjoyed discovering Pilates with Tansy’s intro class. We’ve progressed a lot in a short space of time, building up our strength and confidence with some new exercises each week. Tansy has a calm, relaxed approach, making for an encouraging and friendly atmosphere. Pilates is making a huge difference to my recovery from a back injury so I’m delighted, and I’ll be continuing to the next level.” Caroline, Hove
“Tansy’s classes are such a pleasure to attend.  She explains what to do in a way which is easy to follow, and at exactly the right speed.  I have had problems with muscle inflammation for almost a year, but since attending two months of Tansy’s Pilates classes, I am totally mobile and flexible again.” Sylvia, Seaford
“I have been coming to Tansy’s class for nearly a year now, and have always found her very easy to get along with.  Her classes seem to go so quickly, as she fits so much into them and it’s always different each week. I have a lot of aches and pains and Tansy always seems to sort them out!” Cheryl, Hove
“I had not been getting on at all well with Power Plate® and was just about to give up on it when I found Tansy.  It is amazing the difference the right teacher can make.  She is warm, popular, friendly and a very gifted teacher with the ability to recognise what each individual needs.  The increase in my strength is incredible.  I would highly recommend her classes to anyone.” Heloise, Hove
“I joined Tansy’s Pilates Class some 3 months ago with long-standing back injuries and breathing problems.  Regular Pilates has given me so much relief.  As time goes on, the Pilates exercises that Tansy gets us to do every Friday have helped me develop stronger abdominal muscles, which are starting to support my injured back.  I was also interested to learn that proper breathing is so central to Pilates. I have found that deep breathing has gradually strengthened my lungs, so that my asthma is now well under control; gone are the need for nebulisers and hospital visits!  I have been so impressed by the benefits that I am enjoying with Pilates, that I now attend 2 Pilates Classes with Tansy every week.” Nargis, Uckfield
“Following breast cancer and post viral fatigue, my muscles felt weak with no tone.  I have now had private Pilates classes with Tansy for a few months, with very positive and noticeable changes.  I also have a back problem, and Tansy gives me classes to suit my specific needs, with great benefit.   And, she is great company, so all in all a very positive experience!” Siri, Uckfield
“Having experienced work related back & general posture problems over many years, I had often attempted Pilates exercises using various self help books but with only a moderate degree of success.  I recently concluded that to learn the benefits of Pilates correctly I would need the help of a professional teacher, & Tansy has proven to be a most excellent choice.  In recent months Tansy has effortlessly guided me through the principles of Pilates, teaching me a wide range of exercises many specifically aimed at easing the particular problems I had been experiencing.  I now find my general posture & flexibility has greatly improved, back aches & pains have eased, & I feel more confident in general, which is all the more important when one reaches more mature years like myself!  I have found learning Pilates with Tansy to be most enjoyable, her relaxed & friendly approach, combined with encouragement & advice, praise when merited, all help make the learning process both fun & leaving me with a sense of achievement.  Pilates has now become part of my daily routine, & hopefully will do so in the years to come.” Gareth, Framfield
“Tansy appears to me to be a rare find: someone who teaches with kindness and sensitivity but also who has been practising her subject matter since a very young age! This provides us, the students, with reassuring confidence in her knowledge and the ability to trust that what we are doing is safe and positive for both body and mind. Learning Pilates under Tansy’s guidance is changing the way I move through my daily life and I whole-heartedly encourage anyone reading this to begin the same journey – your body will thank you!” Nicki, Hove
“I am 93 years old, I had a left hip replacement ten years ago and a left arm fracture a year later. In recent years I have been glad of the service of a Masseuse, Physiotherapist and Osteopath.  I wanted routine exercise which would promote coordination of movement. I have found Pilates  helpful.  Tansy has given me a set routine which I try to follow for half an hour almost every day.  It took about five half-hour visits to demonstrate and write a description of the exercises and to see that I did them correctly. I was not able to achieve this in a group class.  The time between visits can be arranged as seems most convenient.  I’m still 93, but I can touch the floor with my fingers and with straight legs!” Kathleen, Hove
“Tansy is a treasure.  She teaches in a calm, clear and measured way making the exercises gradually more demanding as strength improves.  I thoroughly enjoy her lessons and, for the first time ever, actually look forward to taking exercise.  Her weekly lesson provides me with an hour of pleasant conversation and escape from my busy life.  I feel fitter and stronger since taking up Pilates with Tansy and I can recommend her without reservation.” Margaret, Buxted
